Rashida Lewis was born October 1976, in Jersey City, New Jersey, but live in Newark, New Jersey. Later moving to Staten Island, NY during her high school years, it was thought that Lewis would create a comic book company with friends. But instead, Lewis went off to college and obtained a degree in biology with the intent of receiving a PHD in Bioinformatics. While attending college, she took courses in digital art because she couldn’t escape her love of the medium.
In 2004 Lewis decided to fulfill both dreams of becoming a doctor and a comic book artist and started a company called Newave Comics while still attending school. Under this newly formed company, November 2006, she released her first book Sand Storm which won her acclaim in the African American community. She has become the first black female self published, mainstream comic book artist in the industry.
